One year ago, Mtaa Safi, Q-Point, and Gender2Connect started an urban farm initiative in Kibera one of the largest informal settlements in Nairobi, facing significant challenges related to unemployment, foodinsecurity, and environmental degradation.

An area filled with waste and an open sewer was transformed into an urban farm in the heart of Kibera. Through hands-on training and using the already existing knowledge and skills in the community, this project ensured that local youth had the skills and confidence to generate a sustainable income while providing fresh, affordable vegetables to the community. Topics we focused on were irrigation, vertical farming, composting, organic crop protection, and value addition.

By fostering innovative and eco-friendly agricultural methods, the farm not only reduces reliance on external produce but also promotes healthier eating habits. The continued adoption of smart farming technologies, along with growing partnerships, ensures that this model remains resilient and scalable for other communities in need.
